A lot has been written and said about the increasing income and educational gaps in our society and organisations. What should be done about this? The Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad calls on the corporate leaders to take their responsibility by implementing real change in their organisations:
- Create Dignity (‘waardigheid’) – many employees have little responsibility, are limited by rules and regulations and lack the space and resources to do a good job. Leaders and managers should encourage independence and mastery at every level.
- Increase resilience (‘weerbaarheid’) – employees have their own responsibility in staying educated and marketable, but organisations can contribute by giving all employees access to ongoing education, not only the high potentials or senior ones
- Put diversity on the agenda, every day (‘diversiteit’) – recognise that there are unconscious biases and behaviour that limit the chances of different groups in society. Address these beliefs, and include all types of diversity: gender, race, education, socioeconomic etc. Make sure all the voices in your organisation are heard, and can contribute to your success.
- Build credibility (‘geloofwaardigheid’) – be a true leader, and role model the behaviours needed to bridge the gaps: speak out in the political debate, embed inclusive processes in the daily routines in stead of launching a high level initiative that is not supported by the organisation.
It takes courage to admit to your own biases, to experiment with new ways of doing things without guaranteed succes and to speak out publicly for what is right. But it is needed to create a more just and inclusive corporate environment. (Source: https://fd.nl/morgen/1177020/leiders-dicht-de-kloof-nu)
